Holy Mother of Israel

Pro-Israel Zionist ideology has severed the nerve for critical awareness among Americans. This masterfully produced ideology constantly and tactfully manipulates the state apparatus of the United States especially its military, political, and economic resources for the benefit of Israel. The Israeli lobby, through its presence in all strategic locations of the American political and civil society, has effectively installed in the mind and conscience of Americans the cultural software for a sanctified organic unity with Jewish Israel. America has become the “holy mother” of Israel. Ever since 1948 when this sacred mother-child relationship was seeded, the world has not seen one moment of peace. The child is convinced that its mother will shield it from every form of international sanction for its violations of basic human rights and all forms of criminal behavior against the Palestinians, others in the neighborhood, and even the United States itself. Every attempt by the international community to hold this child responsible for its criminal conduct is blocked by mommy USA. The United States has never voted for sanctions against acts of violent savagery by theocratic Israel in the United Nations. Criminal Israel is armored by the veto power of the United States in the UN. The criminal partnership has crippled the American polity and is about to cause its collapse.

Expert puppeteer Zionist Jews and their Christian partners constantly manipulate the American public through continuous artful puppet shows in the media and in the American political, religious, and educational discourse. These puppeteers have taken Erving Goffman’s “Impression Management” model to vicious industrial and postindustrial perfection. Islam, Arabs, Ahmadinejad, Iran, Afghanistan, and everything else that directly or indirectly, implicitly or explicitly, immediately or potentially threatens the interests of expansionist Israeli theocracy become automatically anti-American. Every effort is made to widen the gulf between the United States and the Muslim world. Pro-Israel Zionists calculate that the wider this gulf the closer Israel will be to its mother USA. Over the last fifty years a remarkable feature of the American mindset has become: Israel and its mother instantly become places to be hit at the mere mention of Islam, Arab, Palestine, Iran, Afghan and all else that can be projected as  anti-israeloamerica. “Death to America” is the flip side of “Death to Israel”.  The current fear producing master narrative of Islamophobia itched in the American psyche is: “Judeo-Christian America is about to be hit” by its real or imagined Muslim/Arab/Afghan/Iranian enemies. There isn’t a single location of power in the United States—from the White House, Federal Reserve, Congress, State and Defense Departments, the Supreme Court, academia, the banking system, the professions (law and medicine), the media, and Hollywood—that is not infested and controlled by pro-Israeli Jews and their Christian collaborators.

Critical (even casual) public discourse about “Jew”, “Jewish”, “Jewishness”, and Jewish Israel is a taboo tantamount to “thou shalt not take the name of the Lord (Jew) thy God (Israel) in vain”. The mere mention of these labels in public evokes unease and thoughts of anti-Semitism. Once in my early years in the United States during a public discussion about international relations an acquaintance whispered to me “Jews run this place”. When I asked him why he whispered, he said “I don’t want to be called an anti-Semite”. This effect is more intensive and pervasive today in the American public sphere.  On October 1, 2010 anchorman Rick Sanchez was fired by CNN for merely suggesting that Jews were not an oppressed minority in the United States and that they controlled the American media. The label anti-Semitic is automatically earned if one identifies or even hints in public at the Jewish identity of a Zionist Jew like Alan Dershowitz, Billy Krystal, Peter King, Joseph Lieberman, Frank Gaffny, Rahm Emanuel, Daniel Pipes, David Axelrod, or David Horowitz. Dershowitz has called President Jimmy Carter “anti-Israeli bigot” because of  his pro-Palestinian views.  The cultural and historical components of Jewish identity are tactfully manipulated to suppress critical public discourse about the pro-Israeli Zionist Jewish presence in the state machinery of the United States.

Here is an extract:

“A number of factors played a part in cementing support for Zionism and later for the state of Israel of its two primary international sponsors: Great Britain and the United States.  As you know, each of them in its own era was the greatest power of its time.  In winning over the British and American political classes and their respective publics to the cause of Zionism and to the cause of Israel, a crucial role was played by scholarly and non-academic writings, and later by the cinema and other media. I think it’s insufficiently recognized that establishing the hegemony of Zionism in the field of ideas in an Anglo-American academic and public discourse was a vital precondition for its successes in the political and diplomatic arenas. The discursive victories of Zionism preceded its triumphs in the chancelleries of the world and on the battlefields, and the latter would never have occurred, in my opinion, but for the former. In other words, in addition to being successful as an idea, as a national movement, and as a colonial settler phenomenon, political Zionism has always been a resounding public relations triumph.

  1. happened on this site and wow. actually, the U.S. didn’t do much for Israel in ’48 – not until Kennedy was in office. and it’s odd for you to say that Britain was Israel’s early supporter…you have read a history book, right? also strange to see Ed Said’s name here. attended columbia u. when he taught there…don’t know what his membership in the PNC meant in terms of Ed the man, but, suffice it to say, women on campus knew to stay away from him. let’s just say he didn’t have a lot of self control. seriously, you should try and read some history. not that the nutty, racist polemic thing is any more offensive than the truth sometimes is, but a nodding familiarity with the facts would be refreshing.

  2. Once in a while, Zionist racists, like broken clocks, manage to be correct. Lou Philips does manage to get a sentence or two correct, although most of what he writes is garbage. Is it true that “Pro-Israel Zionist ideology has severed the nerve for critical awareness among Americans”? Or that America is a settler-colonial state founded on the slave trade and genocide? Is it true that “this masterfully produced ideology constantly and tactfully manipulates the state apparatus of the United States especially its military, political, and economic resources for the benefit of Israel”? Or that this ideology justifies supporting a militarized client-state in the Middle East that keeps arms sales and oil prices high to the benefit of American capital and the military-industrial complex, while hardly benefiting the useless homogenizing noun “Israel,” now the 2nd-most-unequal industrialized country in the world? Is it true that “Ever since 1948 when this sacred mother-child relationship was seeded, the world has not seen one moment of peace,” or that the world-system was a violent mess in the global North from 1914-1945, and the global South has endured 500 years of violent colonialism?

Is it exceptional that “Every attempt by the international community to hold this child responsible for its criminal conduct is blocked by mommy USA,” or is this the norm for client states? It is true that “The criminal partnership has crippled the American polity and is about to cause its collapse,” or that the last decade has seen staggering amounts of tribute flowing to the American upper class and Israel has been a part of the system causing that tribute to flow gushingly?

Is it true that “Islam, Arabs, Ahmadinejad, Iran, Afghanistan, and everything else that directly or indirectly, implicitly or explicitly, immediately or potentially threatens the interests of expansionist Israeli theocracy become automatically anti-American,” or that “expansionist Israeli theocracy” should be replaced by “rapacious American empire,” and “anti-American” should be replaced by “anti-Semitic?” Is is true that “Every effort is made to widen the gulf between the United States and the Muslim world”? Or is it true that the “Muslim world” in a psychotropic abstraction concealing class differentiation, a social system in which Muslim fundamentalist in Saudi Arabia partner with America, Iraq was an American ally, Iran under the Shah was a dutiful client?

It was a surprise to see this article appear on my feed-reader.

  3. Max:

Our collective truths are not incompatible or exclusive. My truths are somewhat specific, focused on the mother-child dyad in short historical range—in the ethnographic present, if you will. It was designed for providing a preface for posting Rashid Khalidi’s lecture. Your robust invitation to look at additional magnifying temporal and spatial truths about this relationship in its broader regional and global context is welcome.

  4. Sorry Jamil, that will simply not cut it. Our “respective truths” are “not incompatible” in the sense that the assertions that 1+1=2 and 1+1=4 are “not incompatible”: in a world in which evidence, logic, facts, deductions, and all the rest are simply dissolved in the word-mush of the “ethnographic present” and “magnifying temporal and spatial truths.” I will not play academic word games when so much is at stake. Your piece makes real claims about the world, from which political conclusions may be drawn. So let’s deal with them. You write that “Pro-Israel Zionist ideology has severed the nerve for critical awareness among Americans.” Now, is this really true? Pro-Zionist ideology only started becoming prevalent amongst Americans post-1967, as Israel became a client state in large part due to the chicaneries and maneuvering of its political and economic leadership and their proxies in the United States, referred to as the Israel Lobby, a misleading term in important respects although it will serve as analytical shorthand.

You know that World War II saw the incineration of Hiroshima, Tokyo, Nagasaki, and Dresden; that concentration camps took place under American bayonets in the Philippines in the turn of the century; that we committed genocide against the indigenous population. Against those “temporal truths” you speak of the “severing” of the “nerve” for “critical awareness” that apparently only occurred in 1967 or 1948 or whenever. What this accomplishes both politically and theoretically is that it places American society pre-Zionist infiltration into some totally a-historical hallowed realm of innocence, whitewashing centuries of imperial Western capitalist crimes and suggesting that there was some epochal shift due to a Zionist/Israel Lobby. In turn, dissidents only need to destroy that lobby and Walla! Back to the virginal innocence of pre-Zionist Lobby America.

You comment that “Ever since 1948 when this sacred mother-child relationship was seeded, the world has not seen one moment of peace,” as though this represented some rupture from 500 years of colonial practice. It did not. This is not a matter of respective truths but a respective truth and a respective mis-representation of reality. Your comments that “Every attempt by the international community to hold this child responsible for its criminal conduct is blocked by mommy USA. The United States has never voted for sanctions against acts of violent savagery by theocratic Israel in the United Nations. Criminal Israel is armored by the veto power of the United States in the UN. The criminal partnership has crippled the American polity and is about to cause its collapse” suggest that this is exceptional but rather it is precisely the norm for client states. By implying that there is something exceptional going on, you make empire invisible. That which we cannot see we have no hope of destroying.

You write that “Expert puppeteer Zionist Jews and their Christian partners constantly manipulate the American public through continuous artful puppet shows in the media and in the American political, religious, and educational discourse,” as though this is substantively a departure from prevailing institutional devices for manufacturing American popular consent for the policies of the American political and economic elite. It is not. The American public is systematically manipulated through a million “puppet shows.” That is the system.

You write that “Islam, Arabs, Ahmadinejad, Iran, Afghanistan, and everything else that directly or indirectly, implicitly or explicitly, immediately or potentially threatens the interests of expansionist Israeli theocracy become automatically anti-American,” putting it precisely backwards, as I noted. The sentence should read, “Islam, Arabs, Ahmadinejad, Iran, Afghanistan, and everything else that directly or indirectly, implicitly or explicitly, immediately or potentially threatens the interests of expansionist American empire become automatically anti-Semitic.” One of the functions of the Lobby is to legitimize American imperialism in the Middle East, although very clearly the Lobby is an autonomous agent and also pursues policies that other sectors of American capital find disastrous, as exemplified by figures like Chas Freeman, Stephen Walt, and John Mearsheimer’s dissents from American support for Israel—carried out under the banner of re-deploying a re-charged yet subdued imperial apparatus. One aspect of this is recruiting the discourse of “anti-Semitism” so that it may be used whenever anyone makes a reasonable attack on an American policy that can plausibly be pawned off as an Israeli policy. Can any serious observer think that Afghanistan represents a threat to Israeli planners?

Finally, you write that “There isn’t a single location of power in the United States—from the White House, Federal Reserve, Congress, State and Defense Departments, the Supreme Court, academia, the banking system, the professions (law and medicine), the media, and Hollywood—that is not infested and controlled by pro-Israeli Jews and their Christian collaborators.” If you had simply written “White House” or “Congress” or “Federal Reserve,” your comment would be trivially true—tautological. That Zionism is a subset of white power and it has been through Zionism that Jews have become fully white in American culture is very clear—trading off their support for Israel a la Elena Kagan for full-blown unmerited access to the corridors of power. This has been a very nice arrangement for a subset of affluent and powerful Jews. All they have had to give up is their humanity as they support atrocity in Israel and Palestine. But your comment goes much further than that: what the “professions” such as “law and medicine” being filled with Jews has to do with Israel or a criticism of American imperialism is beyond me. What this has to do with bigotry, or anti-Semitism, is very clear, as Sartre outlined with extreme care and overwhelming force. That this is redolent of an exhausted 19th and early 20th century bigotry is also crystal-clear.

Let me be clear, too. Bigotry is never acceptable. But what’s the potential blow-back from that bigotry? Simple. It taints the universal moral case for Palestinian liberation, while pushing away liberal Jews shaking off the ideological fetters of Zionist indoctrination, and at the same time erasing from history capitalist and imperialist crimes and erasing from society the over-determining fact of capitalist domination of American society. This may well be dandy to you. I neither know nor care. What I care about are my friends in Gaza City and Beit Hanoun who need real solidarity, critical analysis, reasoned interventions, careful arguments, and a continuous adherence to the values that make their struggle for justice a universal struggle against domination rather than a parochial struggle against the Israel Lobby. What they above all do not need are furious covertly bigoted polemics that can do them no good whatsoever. So Jamil I wonder whose interests you think you serve by recounting your story about your friend’s quiet affirmation that “’Jews run this place’. When I asked him why he whispered, he said ‘I don’t want to be called an anti-Semite.’” I don’t blame your friend. The truth is ugly. Jews don’t run this place. Capital does. The obscuring of the rule of capital by the rule of Jews is a very old and very familiar tactic.

Your “truths are” not “somewhat specific,” because they are not truths. Truth serves the Palestinians. Lies serve the Zionists. With that in mind, but not only for that reason, I stick with my truths, and invite you to share them.

  5. Max:

Your swift Brooklynese almost succeeded in going over this oriental head. But no matter the speed and content of your pitch, you do end up (perhaps unintentionally) in my location: “Truth serves the Palestinians. Lies serve the Zionists”. Thus, again, our overlapping collective truths are compatible and inclusive. But if we do differ, it is in our priorities. You are tactfully disguising evil Zionism by diverting us to heartless capital as the driver of the American imperial cart with Zionism as a mere passenger. In my sight, Zionism is the evil pilot and flight engineer set on masterfully pimping for the mother America cart (and its capital cargo with all its criminal files) from one john to another; currently from Iraq to Afghanistan to Iran and beyond in the Muslim world. This is my ethnographic present which I suggest you, as a doctoral student of sociology, receive with its proper “academic” covers. This is all I’ll say on this subject on this blog.

This exchange has caused me to become a visitor to your “Jewbonics” websit. I would appreciate information about the following ethnographic questions on Jewbonics or to my email address: 1. How and why did you end up with the name “‘Ajl”? It is a Semitic adverb. The Arabic version I discern. What is its Hebrew etymology? What was your name before ‘Ajl? Have you visited Gaza or the Palestinian West Bank, when? What did you do there? Do you have relatives or acquaintances from Brooklyn currently living in Israel?

  6. Jamil,
No one had disputed that your Hegelian “sight” perceives Zionism as the driver, but by simply re-affirming your stance rather than engaging with mine alongside its caveats of different agendas, the Lobby’s autonomy, and all the rest you do little to defend it. You merely repeat it. This is your privilege but this is not a counter-argument. Please be aware that I am prepared to defend to the letter my general outlook and research program; that I spend all my time doing so, and that I have done extensive research on these matters and have little interest in “tactfully” disguising a Zionism that destroys Palestinian lives and as an ancillary effect has maddened and disfigured the Jewish culture that produced Spinoza and Chomsky.

As for your probing, irrelevant, personal questions, questions that even bitter political enemies have never asked and never wanted answered, and that are weird in the extreme to the point of being disquietingly bizarre, I shrug and say I fight for Palestine and am Jewish and that is all anyone, anywhere, needs to know.
